When’s the Best Time to Go Outdoors? Nature Always Has a Surprise, Like Fog | WanderBound (2019)

In this light and reflective WanderBound episode, Ari Gunzburg (noted motivational speaker) explores a question people often ask:
“When is the best time to go outdoors?”

Is it for sunrise?
For sunset?
During golden hour?
On a foggy morning?

The answer to this is highly relevant to you and what your plan is, and how easy it is to get up early. Beaches are the one thing that if you want sunrise/sunset views, you have to deal with what you have. IE a west facing beach is good for sunset, and an east facing beach is good for sunrise.

Anyway, when Ari went to film this, they tried sunrise. Left super early. Hiked up. And got completely fogged in.
No epic view. No glowing horizon. Just thick, white nothingness.

But here’s the magic: even when nature doesn’t deliver what you expect, it still delivers something. The fog changed the whole dynamic of the experience, turning it into something still and mysterious. And that’s part of the message:

Nature always surprises you.
Sometimes it's breathtaking.
Sometimes it's frustrating.
But it's always real.

Every time of day offers something different. The sharp contrasts of morning. The golden calm of evening. The hushed stillness of fog. Nature teaches you to let go of control, show up anyway, and receive whatever the world has to offer.

What this episode encourages:

  • Let go of “perfect timing”—just go
  • Expect the unexpected when you’re outdoors
  • Each experience is valuable, even when it’s fogged in
  • Different times = different moods, light, energy
  • The value is in being present, not in getting the shot
